Topical Texts to Learn - Teaching Notes
The general principle behind "topical texts to learn" is that students can benefit from developing and memorizing certain short texts which they can employ in later life situations. For example, it is useful to have a short biographical spiel for job interviews. Hotel workers may be asked certain questions frequently by foreign guests, and even a short, generalized explanation from them will be of more value to the guest than the panicked cop-out of "I'm sorry...". It is useful for a teacher to quiz students carefully about the actual communicative situations they encounter before developing such texts.
The examples of texts to learn in this section are very structured because the relevant students have extremely limited English. More fluent students can be give a much looser framework.
