Parents' Love
@25 January 2000
One of my former classmates phoned me yesterday. She told me she would never speak to her parents again. I asked her why she would do that. She felt wronged, for her parents prevented her from receiving calls. Maybe that sounds incredible to you, but most of my friends including me have had that kind of tragic experience before.
I remember clearly that my parents were strict with me when I was at school. They cared about everything I did. They wanted to know what kinds of friends I'd made, what sorts of activities I would take part in ... In one word, I had to get permission from them before I did everything. And they also didn't like me making calls to my friends, especially boys. They were so sensitive about it. They wanted me to concentrate on my study without any disturbance. How troubsome it was! The gap between my parents and I was getting wider and wider. I always quarrelled with them for their so-called love at that time.
Most young people, including me, haven't understood that kind of love for a long time. But now, since I left school, I've come to realize the love that my parents gave me . I know that is very great love. Society is complicated far beyond my expections. It's so difficult to find that kind of pure love again. I think maybe there was something wrong with their method of showing love, but in essence their love is the greatest and and most selfless.
More than one year of working experience has taught me a lot; not only working skills, but also the ability of distinguishing right and wrong. So I told my friend who called me yesterday: "You'd better try to talk with your parents about their method of managing this problem. But you must believe that they love you more than themselves!"
That attitude of Chinese parents sounds difficult for most people in other countries to understand, doesn't it? But to me, I feel happy now.
yours, rebecca
