Generation Gap

Dear Thor,

How are you these days?

I have come to the new company for one week. Everything is new to me. It's giving me a hard time to come to know these new colleagues, office, duty and new work ways.

I'd like to talk about the generation gap this time. I've heard the phrase "generation gap" from a lot
of books. In my mind, that's an invisible gap between parents and children. It sounded impossible to happen to me, because I like to talk everything over with my parents, to discuss with them about my work, my life, and my friends and so on. But it did happened to me!

One of my best friends asked me for help last week. I have promised her to help this week. I talked it over with my parents yesterday evening. They tried to persuade me against helping, and listed out a lot shortcomings in my friends. They thought she hadn't helped me when I was in trouble. So why should I help her? That is so cold, isn't it? Must it be equal between good friends?

I'm going to run a small restaurant with my former schoolmate in my spare time. When I told this decision to my parents, they were so angry about what they heard. They were sure my schoolmate would cheat me And it was dangerous for a girl to run a restaurant. I want to do something to identify my ability, but they don't believe I could and they don't think it is necessary!

I have nothing more to discuss with them. They try to persuade me against everything I do because they think that it is wrong. And everything I think is childish and strange.

I can hardly bear it any more.

yours, rebecca
